About Us
New Way In was incorporated in October 1972 as a private non-profit organization to provide comprehensive reentry programs for offenders with the goal of reducing the rate of offender recidivism.
Historically, New Way In provided half way houses for men (from the early/mid 1970's - 1990), women (from 1977 - 1990) and male probationers (from 1978 - 1985). In addition, through a variety of local and federal programs, we've provided offender targeted employment services throughout our existence.
Other programs operated through New Way In include a Youth Program for youths aging out the foster care system, with a focus on those adjudicated youth at a local/state facility from 1993 - 1995, and a Work First program for persons on Aid to Families with Dependent Children from 1993 - 1997.
Current programming is focused on assisting tri-county (Greater Lansing, MI) offenders with securing/maintaining employment through employment development programs.
The employment development programs consist of assisting participants with job seeking skills, preparing job applications, sharpening interviewing skills, how to discuss a felony conviction to a prospective employer.
New Way In specializes in resume development. During an individually arranged session, a personalized resume is constructed, utilizing a wide range of formats. This allows New Way In to highlight individual strengths while minimizing gaps in employment records or other problem issues.
In addition, New Way In provides information on other support systems in place for the job-seeking ex-offender, such as the Federal Bonding Program and Work Opportunity Tax Credit. We assist the client in identification and sometimes redefinition of career goals. We offer job leads through a variety of sources, and referrals to other agencies such as homeless shelters, clothing or food banks.
To increase availability of service delivery, New Way In provides these services in several locations: At the Capital Area Michigan Works Center on S. Cedar, as well as specific sessions at the Ingham County Jail in Mason, MI and selected Michigan Prisons.
